Shearwater at SXSW
Despite an earlier downpour that caused everybody to run an hour and a half behind schedule, five-piece Shearwater took the stage at the Eastside Scootenanny under good spirits. The lead Shearwaterian, Jonathan Meiburg, also of Okkervil River, describes Shearwater's new direction: "...It sounds to me like we're heading for something, aiming at someplace, somewhere otherworldly and lovely and a little bit evil, and that we're closer now than before."
And Shearwater did bring the evil. Since I saw them last, they've become a powerhouse of dark, sinister, gloomy, orchestral folk. I mentioned to Jonathan that some of the songs during their set outright frightened me (goosebumps, people, goosebumps), to which he replied, "Good!"
