Just Out of Reach
I hadn't planned on going to see The Gates until way later in the installation, wishing to avoid the crowds of tourists. Unfortunately, my neighbor's subwoofer woke up me around 9:00am this morning. I got out of bed and turned on NY1 and found them in the midst of capturing the live unfurling of The Gates, happening practically outside my front door. (I live a block from Central Park on the Upper West Side, and dear god, are there a lot of people in my hood this morning.) The crowds were sparse so early in the morning, so I grabbed my camera, went out the door, and witnessed a few unfurlings, and did some photography of these saffron-colored beasts to the sweet sounds of the new Andrew Bird album. Everyone around me was talking photographs as well; I kept wondering how many snapshots from the digital cameras around me would wind up on Flickr.
